Halifax Regional Municipality DRC Releases Water Damage & Mould Communication Guidelines in Halifax In June of this year, DRC Tradeshow Services Ltd., introduced a comprehensive set of documentation aimed at better communication between adjusters and restoration contractors. The project was spearheaded by DKC in 2003, and brought together a group of industry players that included eight insurers, a reinsurer, an independent adjusting firm, occupational hygienists, building science engineers, a lawyer and several restoration firms. This group helped to refine the guidelines and to provide feedback on how their design could add value. Background Most water damage and mould remediation protocols do a thorough job of describing the steps necessary to remediate a claim. They all point to the importance of documenting findings and decisions, but make no attempt at providing documentation guidelines. In the absence of such guidelines, documentation has been inconsistent and has forced adjusters to make ad hoc decisions, sometimes based on little shared information. Protocol Independent The DRC protocol is designed to compliment existing remediation standards and to provide decision makers with clear, consistent information to that they can make better decisions faster. It begins by focusing on water losses (the logic being that proper water remediation will reduce the exposure to mould losses), and provides support for all claims, from the straightforward to the most complex. It not only provides a documentation roadmap, but also educates the user along the way. Industry Introduction A panel of experts has been traveling across Canada to introduce this important new standard to the industry. Seminars have been held in Moncton, Halifax, Toronto, Mississauga, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria. There will be additional seminars in 2005.
